Bio

Burton moved from Vidor, TX to Carlsbad, Eddy Co, NM in 1946. He joined McCausland Aviation as a pilot and flew crop dusting, instruction, commercial and charter duties. He was also an accomplished mechanic. He died in ND in a plane crash while crop dusting. CARLSBAD CURRENT-ARGUS, Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, dated for Wednesday, June 20, 1956, page 2, reads as follows: WHITMIRE SERVICES CONDUCTED Funeral services for Berton E. Whitmire, 29, of 1205-A West Bronson street was held at 4 p.m., today at the Hillcrest Baptist Church. Whitmire died Sunday evening (June 17) in a Cando, N.D. hospital as the results of injuries sustained a few hours earlier when a plane he was piloting to dust crops crashed. Officiating was the Rev. Wilson Akins, pastor of the church. Burial was in Sunset Gardens under the direction of West Funeral Home. Active pall bearers were Charles R. Southard, C.D. Beam, William Shuldt, Claude McCausland, J.B. Hutchins and Charles Gough. Honorary pall bearers were Henry Gaines, Leslie Davis, Paul Bledsoe, James Brannon, G.M. Reed, Bjorn Bjorstal, James Lynch, Robert Groves, Clay Simmons, Walt Lieber, Merl Gough, Ray Bucknum and Herbert Webber. (Ref: CARLSBAD CURRENT-ARGUS, Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, dated for Monday, June 18, 1956, front page, reads as follows: LOCAL MAN KILLED IN PLANE CRASH A Carlsbad man died in a Cando, N.D., hospital Sunday evening of injuries received in a plane crash some two hours earlier. He was Berton Whitmire, 29, 1205-A West Bronson street. Deputy Sheriff Don Maxwell, a brother-in-law, said Whitmire was dusting crops when the crash occurred. Details were inavailable here, but Maxwell said Whitmire was the only person in the plane. Whitmire had been employed by McCausland Aviation Inc., since 1953 as a flight instructor and crop duster. He was n leave of absence from the Aviation Company and had been working in North Dakota about a week when the crash occurred. He was born in Lakeview and raised at Vidor, Tex. An Air Force veteran and a member of the WOW, he came to Carlsbad in 1947, lived here a while and then left. He returned in 1950. Funeral services are pending at West Funeral Home. Other survivors include his wife, Mrs. Opal Whitmire, of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Whitmire, Vidor; one son, Burton, Jr.; one daughter, Marilyn; five brothers, Nathan, Calvage, Clinton, Alan Wayne and Roy Gayle, all of Vidor; and three sisters. Mrs. Ann Crenshaw of Carlsbad, and Mrs. William Ezell and Miss Betty Whitmire, both of Vidor.
