Edward John Bernt, 62, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2011, after a 3 1/2-year battle with cancer. A celebration of life memorial was held at the Lakeshore Mortuary, 1815 South Dobson Road, Mesa, Ariz., on Saturday April 9, 2011. Ed was born to Oswald Emil Bernt and Barbara Louise (Mimick) Bernt Feb. 16, 1949, in Columbus. He was the oldest of their eight children. He grew up in Columbus where he graduated from Scotus Central Catholic High School in 1967. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1969 through 1971 and was stationed in Fort Lewis, Wash., before serving a tour of duty in Vietnam. While in Vietnam, he served in what is commonly referred to as the Brown Water Navy and was honorably discharged as an E5. After his service, he came home and worked at the local Hinky Dinky grocery store. On July 21, 1973, he married Jean Marie Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. In 1976, they moved to York, where he worked at a farm implement store and mobile home manufacturing company. He later returned to the grocery business. In 1986, the family moved to Chandler, Ariz. He ended his career in 2007 with Safeway as a quality control specialist at the warehouse in Tempe, Ariz. His hobbies were varied, but he enjoyed woodworking, cooking, being with the grandchildren and watching Nebraska football. He was a treasure hunter at heart, so his favorite past time was metal detecting. He loved his family with a great passion, but his grandchildren were truly the light of his world. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and two brothers, Mary Alice, Mary Louise, and twin brothers, Timothy and Thomas. His survivors include his wife, Jean; their children, Christine (John) Springfield, of Gilbert, Ariz., Laura (Andrew) Zander, of Silverdale, Wash.; three grandchildren, Logan Springfield, Colton Springfield and Maya Zander; a brother, Joseph Bernt, of Merritt Island, Fla.; sisters, Janet Long, of Columbus, and Sue (Benny) Noyd, of Bethany, Mo.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jo and Lawrence Mays, of Elwood, Kan.; sister-in-law, Jan Hiner, of Omaha; 21 nieces and nephews; and 16 great-nieces and great-nephews.
