Laureen M. Gocken, 72, of North Bend, formerly of Fremont, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Fremont Area Medical Center. She was born June 5, 1938, in Schuyler to Frank and Lillian (Houfek) Kucera. She grew up in Schuyler and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1956. She worked at the Top Notch Cafe in Schuyler. She married Jerry Gocken on Dec. 15, 1956, in Schuyler. After her marriage, she moved to Fremont and worked at several restaurants in Fremont and for Fremont Express as a clerk. She also worked at Memorial Hospital of Dodge County Annex (now A.J. Merrick Manor) in housekeeping for 23 years. Her husband preceded her in death May 1, 1999. She volunteered with Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Sunbeams and was a pack director for one year for Park Summer Program on M Street. She was an avid canner and flower grower and she enjoyed crocheting. Survivors include: sons, Gerald Gocken Jr. of Fremont, George (and wife, Sheri) Gocken of North Bend and Michael (and wife, Kayla) Gocken of Schuyler; a daughter, Abby Schlapfer of Fremont; a brother, Laverne (and wife, Karen) Kucera of Columbus; sisters, Barbara (and husband, Dick) Hirschbrunner of Columbus and Julie Kucera of Schuyler; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; her best friends, Redd and Cindy Trout; and godson, Matt Trout of Fremont. She also was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother, Allen Kucera. The memorial service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with the Rev. Scott Jensen officiating. There is no visitation. Private burial will be held at Linwood Hill Cemetery in Linwood. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Dodge County Humane Society in Fremont. Online condolences may be left at www.mosermemorialchapels.com.
