Edith Aurora Lewis, 97, of Albany, Ore., died Sept. 3, 2003, at Albany Care Center. Private family services were held in Albany, followed by a service to be held Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. at High Valley Baptist Church in San Saba and High Valley Cemetery. Mrs. Lewis was born Nov. 29, 1905, in Bend, to James Henry and Olivia Ann Lee Owens. She was reared in San Saba where she attended the Baptist Church. In October 1919, she married Cecil Ray Lewis following his return from military duty during World War I. Mrs. Lewis worked her way through correspondence school and received a diploma from Chicago School of Nursing as a licensed practical nurse. She was a caregiver in her home while the family lived in nearby Junction City and Goldthwaite. During World War II, Mrs. Lewis and her family moved to the Portland, Ore., area, where she and her husband worked in the shipyards. Following the war, Mrs. Lewis was a seamstress for Jantzen knitting mills. In 1951, the family moved to Dallas, and built a home in Mesquite. After her husband's death in 1962, Mrs. Lewis worked at a nursing home in Mesquite until in 1968, when she returned to Oregon. She is survived by two daughters, Neda Lorraine Lewis, of Portland, Ore., and Trina Autumn Lute Hewitt, of Albany; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sons, Basil Osborne "Joe" Lewis, in January 2002, and William Fielding "Fealie" Lewis, in January 2003; by brothers, Cecil Owens and Earl Owens; and by sisters, Ethil January, Jewel January and Gladys Faught.
