Henry Harrison 'Tinker' Taylor fought in the Civil War in Company I, Fifth Tennessee Infantry, Colonel Ben Hill's Regiment. His Soldier's Application for Pension (No. 42960, dated 2/26/34) states in his words: "I received a wound in the head in the battle of Corinth in Mississippi. The wound was so severe that I was given papers to return home, which I did. From the wound, I lost one eye, and never was able to reenter the service." He served in the war from the beginning until April 1862. Henry had also sustained a severe burn to one of his hands during the war. As he told it, they had just routed a camp of Union soldiers and as they ran through after them, he (being half starved) spied a pot of boiling beans. As he ran past it, he attempted to scoop up a handful, thereby sustaining a bad burn that left his hand pretty crippled. 1st wife, Annie Walling/Walden b. abt 1842 Tenn d. abt 1871 Tenn. BIRTH: Although Death Certificate, obituary and gravestone show Henry to have been born ca. 1826-1828, I have gone with the d.o.b. of 1842 (which coincides with various census records) for these reasons: 1) Father, Benjamin Taylor, born abt. 1813 2) Mother, Betsy Ethridge, born abt. 1814 3) Marriage of parents was about 1834 4) Henry sustained a pretty serious head injury during the Civil War and may not have remembered his d.o.b. correctly. 5) The dates on the Death Certificate, obituary and gravestone was info gained from his children, and they had gotten their information from their father, who may not have had a clear memory of his age. 6) The 1930 Census shows he first married at age 17. This also corroborates the 1842 d.o.b. 7) The 1920 Census has his age at 79, also corroborating the 1842 d.o.b. Ten years later, on the 1930 Census, his age shows as 102. I, and others, believe this to be incorrect.
