His wife, Matha Jane "Dovie" is buried next to him. Hers is the shorter of the two tombstones.
William B. Butrom is a "mystery man." It is believed his surname was derived from the Buttram surname, which has many spellings inluding Butram, Buttram, Butrum, Buttrum, and even Bertram! Its hopeful someone visiting this memorial will be able to answer the questions about William's origins. On November 29, 1898 in Collin County, Texas he married Martha Jane "Dovie" (Sturdivant) Wright, the widow of Ben W. Wright, who had died in 1896, leaving her with 8 Wright children: Mollie, Charity, Ben, Emma, James, Mattie, Nannie and Eddie. The marriage record lists their names as W. B. Butrom and Mrs. B. W. Wright. Together William and Dovie had at least three children of their own: Willie Mae, Lillie Fay and George Dewey, who died in infancy. William Butrom enlisted in the US Army on October 3, 1893 at Fort Worth , Texas. He served in D 1 US Artillery and B 23 US Infantry. He gave his place of birth as Bledsoe County, Tenessee. He was described as having dark blue eyes, dark brown hair, a ruddy complexion and 6 feet tall. He applied for a pension on July 12, 1898. Dovie Butrom, his widow, applied for a Widow's Pension on September 3, 1915. William and Dovie are buried beside each other in the Brinlee Cemetery along with some of their children. Dovie's first husband is also buried there.
