Willard F. Martin, 84, Normal, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (March 8, 2011) at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Normal. Willard was born April 14, 1926, in Danvers, the son of Orva Clyde and Mary Alice Hargitt Martin. He married Marjorie L. Bayles on Jan. 5, 1946, in Bloomington. She survives. They celebrated 65 years of marriage on Jan. 5, 2011. Also surviving are five children, Diane (Dave) Sigler, Heyworth; Roger Martin, Hudson; Ronald (Kathy) Martin, Minier; Alice Martin, Bloomington; and Harold "Dean" Martin, Normal; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Clyde (Ethelene) Martin, Mackinaw; two sisters, Helen M. "Millie" Smith, Washington; Emma Mae (Loy) Gilliam, Sun City, Ariz.; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ruth Lilienthal; and two brothers, Raymond and Vernon "Bernie" Martin. Willard enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 16 on June 26, 1943, and received an honorable discharge on April 16, 1947. He served on the USS Baltimore, USS Donner and the USS Mona Island. While serving on the USS Baltimore, they received President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his dog Fala in San Diego, Calif., and transported them to Pearl Harbor. He owned Will's Barber Shop, Normal, for 40 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Carl S. Martin American Legion Post 635 for 65 years. He was an avid White Sox, Bears and Bulls fan. He loved fishing, particularly with his brother-in-law and best buddy, Barney. On sunny days, you could find Willard sitting in his lawn chair outside the garage watching the cars go by.
