Services for Rev. Leonard E. "Red" Bass, 87, of Lufkin, were held Saturday, Feb.8, 2003 in the First United Pentecostal Church in Lufkin, with burial in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Rev. Bass was born Oct. 14, 1915, in Cushing, TX to Virie (Fuller) and James Benton Bass and died Thursday, Feb, 6, 2003 in a Lufkin hospital. A retired minister, Rev. Bass had been pastor of United Pentecostal Churches in Doucette, Zavalla, Keltys (Henderson Street UPC) and Kennard during a ministry that spanned almost 50 years. He was currently a member of the First United Pentecostal Church, and had resided in Lufkin most of his life. He was retired from the construction industry. Major construction projects that he superintended include Regions Bank (originally Lufkin National Bank), Lufkin Middle School Library, Lufkin Daily News' offfices and the Civic Center. In addidion, he served as Lufkin's City Building Inspector for a number of years. He was preceded in death by daughter, Dorothy Bass Hathcock, in 1984. Survivors: wife, Bennie L. Bass of Lufkin; son, James Benton Bass of Fort Worth; daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Jack Harrison of Dallas; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
