Shaffer, 73, of Berrien Springs died at home on Feb. 14, 2011, after a seven-month battle with cancer. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at the Berrien Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Cindy Parsons officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 12 p.m. until service time at the church and to leave online messages at www.allredfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Larry's name may be made to the church. Allred Funeral Home of Berrien Springs is serving the family. Larry was born Jan. 18, 1938, in Berrien Center, the son of Earl and Esther (Michael) Shaffer. After graduating in 1956 from Berrien Springs High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., for two years. Larry retired from Continental Can Company of St. Joseph after 33 years of service. He was a sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and football games. He liked spending time outdoors feeding birds and other small wildlife. Larry married the former Joyce Tucker in January 1959, and together they had two daughters who survive, Sheree Shaffer of Kewanee, Mo., and Melissa (Matt) Dospoy of Berrien Springs. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Lindsey (Stephen) Mitchell and Michael Dospoy, and two great-grandchildren, all of Berrien Springs. Larry also leaves behind a sister, Marilyn Sunday of Berrien Springs, and two brothers, Gordon Shaffer of Buchanan and Bill (Louise) Shaffer of Alabama. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Shaffer, and two brothers, Eldon and Rodney Shaffer.
