Bio

Joseph Clinton Jewell, age 90 of Palisade died Sunday, October 21, 2007 at the Aitkin Health Services in Aitkin. He was born April 17, 1917 at Merna, Nebraska to Joseph W. and Lena (Ferguson) Jewell. He was the seventh in a family of 11 children. He moved with his family in 1927 to Swatara, Mn. He later moved to Tamarack and then in 1933 to the Moose Meadow Community east of Swatara. Joe worked as a farm hand near Swatara until 1938 when he entered the C.C.C. Camp at Blackduck, Minnesota. Joe's father died in 1943 and Joe made a home for his mother. They moved to a farm in Hebron Twp. north of Palisade, where he worked in the woods. Joe married Ruby (Lamke) Reich on April 17, 1946. They purchased the Mike Chrysinger farm adjoining his wife's farm. They built a new home in 1948. They farmed there until 1967 when they moved to a hobby farm at Rossburg, east of Aitkin. Joe worked for Woodland Container until he retired in 1979. He had been a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church of Palisade before they transferred their membership to St. Johns Lutheran Church in Aitkin. He had held the office of trustee and deacon at St. Johns. In 1988 they sold their home at Rossburg and moved to Bethany Country Apartments in Brainerd. They became volunteers for the B.C.H. Services until 1993. They also were full time volunteers at the Brainerd State Hospital until the hospital closed. They also volunteered at Bethany Good Samaritan. In 1994 they moved back to Aitkin leaving many friends in Brainerd. One of Joe and Ruby's dreams was to go to Hawaii and they were able to do this. He is survived by his wife Ruby (Lamke) Jewell of Palisade; daughter and son in law: Shirley and Roger Musil of Ohio; 3 grandchildren: MaryJo, Shawn, and Shane Musil; and 2 great grandchildren; adopted daughters and spouses: Darlene (Reich) and Al Seguin and Carol (Reich) and Ben O'Brien; Joanne (Reich) and Chuck Oaks; brothers: Rollie Jewell of Minneapolis; Archie and Wonda Jewell of Arizona and sisters: Emma Dennison of Aitkin and Vera and Earl Reich of McGregor and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister Ethel Olds, and brothers: James, William, Fred, and Ernest Jewell and an infant brother. And also beloved adopted son Joseph E. Reich. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 25, 2007 at 11 AM from St. John's Lutheran Church in Aitkin with Rev. David Becker officiating. Burial will be in the Hebron Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.
