Bio
Killed on the courthouse step of the San Augustine Courthouse in a famous Gunfight shoot out. These are scanned images of a letter written by H. M. Sublett (grandson of Elisha Roberts) to his cousin Horace O. Hall (another grandson of Elisha) regarding the murder of two of their kinsmen, Felix and Sidney Roberts, and the wounding of a third, Noel G. Roberts. The gunfight described is also mentioned in the book Gunsmoke in the Red Lands by Joe Combs. Three Men Killed as the result of an Old Feud At San Augustine, San Augustine county, Texas, Monday, a pitched battle between the Wall faction on the one side and the Brocks on the other, resulted in the death of Felix G. Roberts, his brother Sidney Roberts and the fatal wounding of Noel Roberts, sheriff of the county and brother to the dead men. The feud grew out of politics and has been brewing for some years. A few weeks ago Ned Wall, the sheriff was shot and killed by King Borden, at San Augustine. Borden fled, but afterward surrendered and was admitted to bail. Noel Roberts was appointed sheriff. Last Saturday Eugene Wall, brother to the dead sheriff, shot to death Ben Brock, a kinsman of Borden. Monday the factions met when the examining trail of Wall was to be held, and every man came to the court house armed. Hostilities began with the appearance of Sheriff Roberts and his brother who fell at the first volley from a score of guns. Application was at once made to the governor for troops and the Stone Fort Rifles were ordered from Nacogdoches. There is much excitement and more trouble is feared.
