Martha Jane "Crow" Smith was born Apr. 1844 in South Carolina, the daughter of James M. & M. Rebecca (McCarter) Crow. She married John Loden Smith Jan. 8, 1865 in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. They had seven children; William Walton Smith, James Abner Smith, Robert Lee Smith, Margaret Almedia Smith, Charles O'Conner Smith, Mary Rebecca Smith, and Houston Alexander Smith
