Alexander was reared a farmer. His father, Joseph B. Buckley was born in Virginia on Feb. 9, 1801 and married Nancy H. Bass, daughter of Capt. Bass. He was the father of 5 children, Alexander being the third. Alexander lost his father at age four and had little opportunity for education since it fell to him to help support the family as soon as he was old enough to work. Dec. 15, 1853 he married Martha J. Morris, daughter of L.T. Morris, a native of Butler County, Kentucky, a farmer of substantial means and a Justice of the Peace. In 1858 the Buckley family came to Texas, arriving with a few hundred dollars with which he purchased land at $7 per acre. Before they were settled, he was called upon to serve in the Confederate Army, and in 1861 he enlisted in Company K, 16th Texas Cavalry and took part in the engagements in Louisiana and Arkansas. At the Battle of Pleasant Hill in Louisiana, he was struck by a minie ball in the right foot. He was taken prisoner and after six months in the hospital, he was sent home, crippled for life. It was several years before he was able to resume his farming activities but the farm of 420 acres was one of the productive farms of the time, and here he and his wife and six children enjoyed a comfortable life.
