Jacob Marion Francis Bryan was the son of John Bryan (North Carolina) and Millie Pullen Bryan (daughter of Moses Bryan of North Carolina). Jacob was the fourth of ten children. When Jacob was 21, he came with his family to Texas in 1859. When the Civil War started, he enlisted in Company C of the 9th Texas Infantry. He was injured at Shiloh and taken prisoner. Later in the war he was exchanged and returned to his home, then enlisted in Bourland's regiment and did duty on the Texas frontier for the duration of the war. When he came home, he married Elizabeth Chambers in 1866. To them was born ten children. Besides farming his large acreage, he was a successful businessman in ginning, milling, and merchandising. His store was at a corner on the Chambersville Road.
