Thelma Puckett, the granddaughter of John Berry and Betsy Smothers Berry, is the daughter of Eunice Berry Johnson, the ninth child of Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr., and Rhoda Jane Hughes. Thelma was born in Sonora, Sutton County, Texas, on November 8, 1900. Thelma was selected for the First Lady of Fort Stockton Award in 1958. She was a member or an officer in the Parent-Teachers Association during all the years that her children were in school. She actively worked for the Girl Scouts for thirty years, was a member of Magno USVI and was awarded a thirty-year pin. She was one of the founders of the Fort Stockton Community Library and served on the library board. She was a member of the district board of the Federated Clubs, was the treasurer for twenty-five years of the Fort Stockton Social Club, and was a member and an officer of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Prior to her retirement, she did volunteer work in the Comanche View Home for the Aged and was active in Red Cross service. She has traveled throughout the world. Thelma served the John Berry association as its first secretary during 1958 and 1959 and was a co-author of "The John Berry Family of Berry's Creek, 1958." She gathered and prepared the genealogical data about the John Berry and Betsy Smothers line for the book John Berry and His Children, 1988. The Berry family descendants are grateful to Thelma, who with a few others, kept alive the story of the family until it could be written for those yet to come.
