Bio

On Oct. 23, 1845 John married Martha Ann Barclay of Lebanon. Two daughters and one son were born. In 1852 he and his family came to Texas, spending the first year in Red River County. In 1853 they came to Collin County and settled in the Bloomdale Community, where four other children were born. During the Civil War he followed his trade as a miller for the government, making flour at an old crudely constructed mill that was located near the city limits of McKinney. This mill later became the Burrus Gin and Mill location. The family worked to establish the Church of Christ in the area. John served as County Commissioner in 1866. "Uncle Johnny" as he was called in the community died March 4, 1883. He and Martha are buried not far from the site of their pioneer home.
