Bio

Bluefield Evening Leader, Bluefield, West Virginia Monday, December 21, 1908, page 1 The most sensational death in the history of Bluefield is now before the coroner for investigation. Yesterday a son of Mack Piercey discovered a dead body hanging to a limb of a small apple tree in a hollow on the Hale farm, to the left of the electric car line and in full view of the car line and the railway, though several hundred yards distant. How long the body had been hanging there no one knows, but it had evidently been for several hours. The man's clothes were soiled with mud at the knees and on the elbows. He was hanging to a limb by a small cord, resembling a cotton clothesline, and one heel touched the ground. His arms were drawn up until his hands almost touched the front of his breast. There was no evidence before the jury to show that it was a case of murder, and yet it was the unanimous opinion, we believe, of those who saw him, that he had not hung himself. Papers found on his person showed that his name was Charles Kreicar and the he was en route from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Petersburg, Va. At least he had on him baggage checks from Winnipeg, via St Paul, Chicago and Columbus to Petersburg. It was shown that the man left the train at this place to buy food and after getting several sandwiches at the Windsor hotel, all further trace of him was lost. It is a theory of some of the officials that he missed his train, after which he fell in with some one who spoke his native tongue and that he was lured to some den where he was murdered and robbed and his body conveyed to the place where it was found. The jury has not yet completed its labors, but we have it on excellent authority that they will find, in the absence of other evidence, that the man came to his death by violence at the hands of unknown parties. A telegram from Petersburg to L E Johnson at Roanoke, of which the following is a copy, strongly favors the idea of suicide. Petersburg, Va, Dec 21, 1908 L E Johnson, Roanoke Man's name Chas Kiecar. Wife has $290.00 cash and five express order for $50 each. Undoubtedly a case of suicide, as woman says he was very sick on way down and told her he was going to die several times. Mr Baldwin's representative, Mr Wade, came down with them. Woman identified piece of rope with which he was hung as part of rope he had in his grip. She is also satisfied that he committed suicide. I will remain and get statements from the boy and mother and Mr Wade will return on No 3 with full particulars. F H LABAUME The man had a wife and eleven children. He was apparently about 45 years of age, and from persons who saw him on the passenger train Saturday night it is learned that he talked English fairly well and that he seemed to be in an excellent humor. He had a roll of money with him when making some little purchase on the train, but when found he had only a $5 gold piece and two Canadian dollar bills. Those were in a second pair of pants he wore inside his outer suit. A bill book contained a lot of notes and receipts but no money. A check for $500 was on a bank at Esterhazy, in Western Canada. The coroner's jury, composed of Justice E P Godbey, Physician E H Thompson, and jurors R A Hale, S G Johnston, R A Wells, E G Wells, J W Piercey and J F Phelps, adjourned over until tomorrow afternoon to hear further evidence. A strong bit of evidence against the theory of suicide is the fact that there was no relaxation of the muscles after the body was hanged, indicating that the man was dead and stiff in death before being tied up. The body was shipped to Petersburg, Va, whither the parties were bound. It is learned that the woman's father lived about two miles from Petersburg and they were going to make their home on the old farm. When Kreicar left the train he was wearing a black felt hat, but when found he wore no hat and the hat has not been found.
