Bio

Sarah Ellen Hatch Sarantinos West was born March 4, 1894, in Vernal, Utah to Josephus and Martha Luella Thomas Hatch. She was the fifth child in a family of 13. She attended school in Vernal. She always helped her mother a lot; she stayed home from school one day each week to help and would hurry home from school each night. She married James Sarentinos on April 10, 1911, in Vernal, Utah. They were blessed with two fine daughters, Mereda and Velda. Her husband died Feb. 22, 1919, of flu and pneumonia at the age of 30. She worked with her mother and provided for her two girls. She cooked in a boarding house. She married Lawrence Henson West on December 28, 1920, in Grand Junction, Colorado, and was sealed to him in the Salt Lake Temple on December 11, 1936. She was good to her step-sons and was loved by them. She left her home in Rainbow, Utah, and stayed in Vernal, Utah to give birth to me, Joan, on April Fool's Day, 1926. I am the only child of this union. I feel that she did a wonderful job raising a mixed family--three families in one. She worked very hard after Dad became ill and also took care of him. She didn't have a full night's sleep in the 20 years of caring for him. People remarked on how clean Mother kept Dad. She was particular about this. She has a very strong testimony of the Gospel and has been active in the Church. She does genealogical research. She goes to her children and helps them if they need her. She is in good health and worked at the Pleasant Grove cannery last summer (1962) at the age of 68. She lived for her children and grandchildren, and they all loved her deeply. Her great grandparents, Norman Sharp and Martha Jane Sargent, came across the plains in the same company as Brigham Young and Henson Walker. Her great-grandmother was one of the three women that came. Mother has two brothers and a sister in our Walker Book-- they married into the Eaton Family. Marion Hatch, Josephus Hatch, and May Hatch Eaton. By Joan West Strasburg, daughter.
