John M. Kerns was born October 19, 1870 in either Knox County, Illinois or in Missouri, the son of John Henry Kerns and Rebecca C. (Adkins) Kerns. John Henry Kerns was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Co. F of the 86th Illinois. I can not find the family at the time of the 1870 census, whether they are in Missouri or Illinois. John Henry Kerns almost certainly died sometime between the birth of his last child, John, in 1870 and 1878. None of the family can be found in the 1870 census. I believe that there is a good chance that John Henry Kerns was buried in the Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery in Hermon, Chestnut Township in Knox County, Illinois. Rebecca's family, the Adkins family was using this cemetery at this time, so there is a good possibility, his earthly remains were laid there. Rebecca C. (Adkins) Kerns was married 2nd on April 18, 1878 in Knox County,Illinois to James Donaho. James was born on January 28, 1820, the son of Jacob Donaho and Nancy (Collins) Donaho, and died on March 4, 1903. His mortal remains were laid in the Hermon Methodist Cemetery in Hermon, Knox County, Illinois. At the time of the 1880 census, John Kerns is found in Chestnut, Knox, Illinois. His father and mother are listed as being born in Iowa and Illinois, respectively; Self James Donaho M 60 Kansas Wife Rebecca Donaho F 42 Illinois, United States Step Daughter Rachel Kerns F 14 Illinois, United States Step Son John Kerns M 11 Illinois, United States I can not find John Kerns at the time of the 1900 census, but Rebecca and James Donaho are again found in Chestnut Township, Knox County, Illinois at the time of the 1900 census; Head James Donaho M Jan 1820 80 Kentucky Wife Rebeca C Donaho F Jan 1840 60 Indiana Grandson Thomas Donaho M Nov 1884 16 Iowa Granddaughter Sarah Donaho F Oct 1889 11 Nebraska Father-in-law Lewis Adkins M Jul 1812 88 Ohio John M. Kerns was married to Lena __________ on __________ __, 1____ at __________, __________. Lena was born on February 20, 1870 at __________, Illinois. There is a record of a John H. Kerns being married to a Mrs. Lena A. Daum on January 29, 1889 in Richland County, Illinois. Could this be them? On Mar. 4, 1903, Rebecca's 2nd husband, James Donaho, died. His mortal remains were laid in the Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery in Hermon, Knox County, Illinois. Rebecca's name and date of birth was also carved on his stone in preparation for her being buried here as well, but some time before 1910, she moved west to live with her son, John, Oklahoma. At the time of the 1910 census, Rebecca is found, widowed, and living with her son, John M. Kerns, and his family in Hillsboro, Grady County, Oklahoma; Head John M Kerns M 39 Missouri Wife Lena M Kerns F 40 Illinois Mother Rebecca Donaho F 72 Illinois Adopted daughter Marguerite Mck?Ley F 4 Kansas At the time of the 1920 census, John and Lena are found in Ward 1 of Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma.
