Bio

POCATELLO - Ethel Chilton Henderson, 90, eternal companion of 69 years and loving mother, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at her home, surrounded by all her living children and husband. She was born on August 5, 1920 in Moroni, Utah, to Isaac and Margaret Chilton. She was the third daughter of four. She was raised in Pocatello, ID. She was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of 15. Ethel graduated from Pocatello High School in 1937, and later graduated from Felt and Terrant Comptometer School in Salt Lake City in 1939. She married Boyd F. Henderson on October 8, 1941 in the Salt Lake Temple. She is the mother of nine children, 42 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She loved being a wife, mother and grandmother and devoted her life in serving them. She was a room mother for her children at school and was the Alameda Junior High PTA president. She welcomed all who came into her home and some of her children's friends called her Mom. She was an excellent cook. Her favorite color is pink! She enjoyed getting together with family on any occasion. Ethel loved to go shopping and always seemed to find unique things. She had the opportunity to travel throughout the world with her husband and children. Her family looked forward to a week-long family reunion at Bear Lake every summer. She was faithful in her church, serving as counselor and Primary president of the Pocatello Fifth Ward, Relief Society cultural refinement teacher, gospel doctrine teacher, companion to her husband to preside over the Melbourne, Australia Mission, visiting teacher, and ordinance worker in the Idaho Falls, Idaho Temple for 12 years. Ten missionaries served in the mission field from her home. Ethel loved to read and was a member of the Les Belles Lettres Literature Club for over 30 years. She loved poetry and has written many poems of her own. Ethel is preceded in death by her son, Gregg; her parents; and her three sisters: Afton, Faun and Lillian. She is survived by her sweetheart, Boyd; six sons: Kent (Mardell), of Boise, Louis (Teri), Trevor (Holley) and Cornell (Kayleen), all of Pocatello, Lyle (Michelle), of Riverton, UT, and Jason (Tonja), of Logan, UT; and two daughters: Tascile (Joseph) Fleischel, of South Jordan, UT, and Melanie (Benjamin) Allen, of Provo, UT. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 14, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the LDS Central Stake Center (40 Oakwood Drive), with Bishop Rod Johnson of the Cedar Second Ward officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave., and on Friday from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Thanks to Dr. Call, T. Kaufmann N.P., Creekside Hospice, and Cedar Second Ward. Because of Mother's love for missionaries, you are welcome to make a donation to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Missionary Fund. Arrangements are under the care of Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel.
