Bio

R. Heston Havens of Portland, passed away peacefully in his home Dec. 14, 2010. He was 94 years old, just two weeks from reaching his 95th birthday. He succumbed to congestive heart failure. Heston was born Dec. 29, 1915, in Matador, Texas, to D.H. and Genetta Havens, and grew up in Levelland, Texas, with his three siblings. In 1935, Heston moved to Lubbock, Texas, to attend Texas Tech College. He married Ruth Stanfill June 2, 1937. Together Heston and Ruth moved in 1942 from Lubbock to Portland, where Heston found work in the shipyards during World War II until he entered the military in 1944. He last served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, and was honorably discharged in 1945. He and Ruth lived in Portland ever since, and loved the beautiful area. Heston worked as an independent insurance agent for State Farm Insurance for 34 years, retiring in 1986. He enjoyed interacting with his clients, many of whom he considered friends as well. A member of the Church of Christ, Heston served as an elder in the church for many years. He helped found Columbia Christian School, and was a generous supporter of projects at church, school, and in the community. Heston belonged to the Montavilla chapter of Kiwanis International, proudly serving in several positions in that organization including lieutenant governor. He donated many hours to both church and Kiwanis summer camps for kids, helping to build and upgrade the grounds and facilities. As a small boy, Heston rode across Texas in a covered wagon with his family. An avid car buff, Heston had a lifelong love affair with cars and all things mechanical, and proudly told folks he had owned 158 cars over his lifetime. Always adventurous, Heston and Ruth went on many trips together. They traveled to all 50 states, and to countries across the world, including China, South America, Europe, Japan, and parts of the Middle East. Heston loved to build things, and built several motor homes from the chassis up. He and Ruth drove hundreds of miles in each one, including one memorable trip up the Alcan Highway to Alaska. Heston loved to tell stories and appreciated a good joke. He liked nothing better than sitting around their large dining room table talking to friends. Over the years he and Ruth generously opened their home to friends and family for meals and parties, and enjoyed showing hospitality to everyone they knew. Heston is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ruth Stanfill Havens; and four children, daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Bob Doescher of Portland; son and daughter-in-law, Roland and Mona Havens of Portland; son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Sooja Havens of Japan; and daughter, Holly Havens, also of Portland. Heston is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A private burial was held Dec. 22, 2010, in Brainard Pioneer Cemetery. A celebration of Heston's life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, in Eastside Church of Christ, 9030 N.E. Glisan St., Portland, OR 97220.
