John was born in Wedgeburrough, Staffordshire, England and arrived in the United States on April 14, 1865, the day John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln. He lived in Pennsylvania then Iowa before traveling west in 1886 by covered wagon to Glen Rock, Wyoming. He worked as a cowpuncher for several years then moved to Red Lodge, Montana in 1889 where he was a miner and resided for the rest of his life. He married Miss Elizabeth Bailey on 25 September 1890. She passed away on 18 March 1912. For the last few years of his life, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Leland Newman. He was survived by his daughter, Mrs. Newman; a son, Carl E. Bailey of Billings; a sister, Mrs. Selina May of California; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
