Robert "Bob" J. Wise was a long time resident of Hughes Springs. He was born in Georgia, August 1, 1852, and was the oldest of the nine children of William "Buck" C. and Martha High Wise. When Bob was about a year old, the family moved to Alabama and lived there for four or five years. Then, the family came to Texas, arriving by steamboat at Jefferson in the late 1850's which was during Jefferson's heyday as a riverport. They purchased wagons and came to what was then Titus County. They settled at the Bradford Chapel community, about three miles northeast of Daingerfield, and lived there for a number of years. About 1875 Bob married Mary "Mollie" Pratt, the daughter of Alfred A. and Sarah Allison Pratt. Bob and Mollie lived at Bradford Chapel during the early years of their marriage an in 1886 donated an acre of their land for a school there. Shortly after the turn of the century, Bob and his family moved to Hughes Springs where they lived on Main Street, across the street from the L.D. Keasler home. Bob had a farm just outside of town, and he and his son, Willie, ran a cotton gin and shingle mill from 1902 until shortly after Willie's death in 1914. Bob and Mollie had five children: Aurilla, Ola, Willie, Rufus and James Leonard.
