Young Jeptha Harrington, enlisted as a private on 28 Jul 1862 in Company A of th53rd Alabama Partisan Rangers, CSA. He also served as a private in Company B of Murphy's Battalion in the 3rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment. He is listed as V. J. Harrington in the Regimental Roster. He received Texas Confederate Pension #11965 on 29 Sep 1906 at Cumby, Hopkins County, Texas. In 1878 Young Jeptha Harrington joined a wagon train of relatives and neighbors on a migration from Coosa County, Alabama to settle near Garden Valley, Smith County, Texas. He joined his Harrington cousins who had migrated to Smith County after the Civil War. About 1907, he migrated to Lea County, NM and claimed a homestead. On 23 May 1913, Young Jeptha Harrington was awarded a patent for 320 acres of government land in Section 5, T20S, R36E and Section 32, T19S, R36E, near Monument, Lea County, NM. Young Jeptha Harrington died in 1917. He is not listed in the New Mexico death certificates so he probably died at home and is buried on his homestead without a marker.
