Married Grace Hull on 12 October 1923. Arvel was listed as "Orville" in the Arkansas Death Index, in error. Arvel was survived by his parents, an elder sister, Dadie A. Mathis Watson; a younger brother Oval A; and younger sisters, Ada A. Mathis Ferguson and Ina Mathis.
