Services for John R. Hancock, a retired Dallas firefighter, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Gun Barrel City, Texas. Burial will be at noon Saturday at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas. Mr. Hancock, 76, died Thursday of a stroke at a Kaufman hospital. He joined the Dallas Fire Department in 1947. His son Thomas E. Hancock of Durango, Colo., said that his father enjoyed his time in the department. "He liked working there because of the friendships he made and the family-type atmosphere the department provided," Thomas Hancock said. "He worked very hard, and he always wanted to do what he could to help people." His son added that his father did not talk about his job much, because he did not want his family to worry about him. Mr. Hancock retired in 1969 and opened a transmission shop in Duncanville. He closed the shop in 1974. Other survivors include his wife, La Verne Hancock of Gun Barrel City; another son, George M. Hancock of Whitney, Texas; a sister, Dorothy Van of Dallas; and three grandchildren. - Dallas Morning News September 2, 1995
