Gertrude Rose Ahlers age 94 of Winner, SD passed away Sunday, March 19, 2006 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center. Gertrude Rose Ahlers was born June 14, 1911, at her home near Wewela, SD, to Louis and Christiana (Annie Hartmier) Link. Gertrude grew up on the family homestead near the Turtle Buttes at Wewela, SD. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Colome High School and attended Southern State Normal College at Springfield, SD. After receiving her teaching certificate she taught rural schools in Tripp County. Gertrude married Harry Ahlers of Clearfield, SD on September 19, 1936 where they lived their life together for 52 years. The couple had four children. During these years she was active in community services. She was a charter member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Clearfield, was a member of the Ladies Aid, officer for the AAL over 20 years, and helped in supporting the many firsts that came to the community. She enjoyed her family and friends stopping by for visits, coffee, cookies, meals, greeted with a big smile and warm heart. Her interests among many were sewing, cooking and all the many farm life activities. However, her flowers and her big vegetable garden were among her favorite hobbies. The love of her family was unending. Gertrude is survived by her four children: Rose Marie Rush of Winner, SD, John Robert Ahlers of Clearfield, SD, Harriet Ahlers of Sidney, NE and Sharon (Rick) Hagerty of Deadwood, SD; one sister, Elizabeth (Melvin) Cahoy of Dallas, SD; two sisters-in-law, Mary (Orvin) McCready of Winner, SD and Shirley Ahlers of Jackson, CA; three grandchildren; Grant (Julie) Rush, Valerie (Paul) Ahrendt, Jason (Trina) Hagerty; two step-granddaughters; Cindy (David) VanHorn and Shelly (Tim) Lechner; six great- grandchildren, Bryce Ahrendt, Jordan Ahrendt, Alexa Ahrendt, David Rush, Jesse Rush and Coyle Hagerty; five step-grandchildren; Brandon VanHorn, Tye VanHorn, Gracie VanHorn, Nathan Lechner and Jacob Lechner, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry, two sisters, Helen VanderKuur, and Louise Harkin, one brother Otto Link, one son-in-law Denzil Rush, two sisters-in-law, Minnie Link and Marjorie Ahlers and four brothers-in-law, Louie VanderKuur, Jerome Harkin, Eilert Ahlers and Alvin Ahlers and one step-great-grandson Kyle VanHorn. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 24th at 2:00 PM at Christ Lutheran Church in Winner, SD. Burial will be in the Winner Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Thursday, March 23rd from 4-8PM at Christ Lutheran Church. A prayer service will begin at 7:30 PM at the church.
