Farmer The following article was published in the Big Spring Daily Herald on Sunday morning, February 28, 1937. ∼ Man Is Found Dead In Camp Suicide Verdict Returned In Asphyxiation Of J. R. Horton Body of J. R. Horton, Howard county farmer, was found in a gas filled room at a west side tourist camp Saturday noon. He had been dead approximately two hours, officials said. Justice of Peace Joe Faucett returned a verdict of suicide by asphyxiation. He said that the body was found lying face up with a pillow over the face and a gas hose inserted underneath the pillow. Two notes were found in the room, one on a table and the other in the victim's coat pocket. One was addressed to his daughter and the other to officers, blaming himself only for the act. The body was discovered when an attendant at the camp attempted to enter the room to clean it. Smelling the gas fumes, she summoned the manager who cut off the stove and notified police. Horton had been in failing health for some time. Friends had noticed the decline since his wife's death in 1931. Among survivors are two children residing in or near Big Spring, Dude Horton and Miss Eula Mae Horton. Funeral arrangements are pending. Eberley Funeral home is in charge.
