John Beck is the son of Sanford J. Beck of South Carolina and Matilda Rountree of Illinois. John had five sisters and one brother Manly S. Beck who came home to Collin County and died of wounds suffered in the Civil War. John enlisted in Co. C, 6th Texas Cavalry, CSA at Dallas, Texas, in September, 1861. Many of the men were from Collin County where John lived with his parents near the town of McKinney. The 6th Cavalry fought at Elkhorn Tavern, then moved west of the Mississippi River and fought at Corinth and Hatchie Bridge in Mississippi. Here the regiment reported 148 killed, wounded, or missing. To the south lay Okolona in Chickasaw County, the site of a large Confederate hospital. Many of the wounded from the battles of Shiloh and Corinth were sent to Okolona. It is believed that John died there after a long illness at age 25. Over 800 soldiers who died at the hospital are buried in this Confederate graveyard started in 1862 – many in unmarked graves - adjoining the city cemetery. A historic marker is located in the Okolona Confederate Cemetery on South Church Street. Source: "Living in Murphy TX 1865-1870"
