Bio

Jerome Franklin 'PeeWee' Fleecs, 73, of Sutherland, passed away on Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at the Sutherland Care Center in Sutherland. Jerome 'PeeWee' Fleecs was born the second of three children to Charles Edward and Alice Marqueritte Rourke Fleecs on March 12, 1937, at Sutherland. He shared the same birthday as his godfather, Uncle Frank John Fleecs, of Sutherland. He became know as 'PeeWee' in his early school years, and it stuck. Many people believed that PeeWee and Jerome were brothers. Rodeos were his passion. If there was a rodeo around, he was there. PeeWee spent his early years trying to get out of school, as he would rather ride horses. At the age of 13, he rode a horse at the Sutherland Rodeo and in 1954, when he was a junior in high school, he was the Bull Riding Champion of Nebraska. He graduated from Sutherland High School in 1955 and that spring, while riding a bull at the Harrison rodeo, the bull's horn went into Pee Wee's mouth tearing out his palate and upper teeth. In 1959, he was the Nebraska Bareback Riding Champion and was state runner up in 1960, 1962 and 1965. He continued to rodeo on weekends until the mid '70s while he worked during the week. On the Sutherland Centennial Mural, Jerome is depicted riding at the Sutherland Rodeo. It seemed like there wasn't a cowboy he didn't know. On Dec. 29, 1961, Jerome married Norma June Fosket at Alliance and they made their home in Sutherland. They had two sons, Frank J. Fleecs and Jerre Rome Fleecs. Jerome drove a truck for many years while in business with his brother, Don, and it was known as Fleecs Brothers. In 1978 he started his own trucking firm, J.F. Fleecs, Inc. Besides managing the trucking firm, Jerome and Norma were also active in farming and ranching. Jerome was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Survivors include his son, Frank J. Fleecs, of Sutherland; a daughter-in-law, Rhonda Fleecs, of North Platte; a sister, Kathleen Hoatson, and brother, Don Fleecs, both of Sutherland; many nieces, nephews and other family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; a son, Jerre Rome; and his parents, Alice and Charlie Fleecs. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery south of Sutherland. The family has established a memorial.
