From Kittson County History of the War (app. 1920): WWI Veteran. Only Kittson County lad to be awarded the Croix de Guerre from the French. MICHAEL EKSTROM—Master Signal Electrician, Co. E, 2d Bn. Signal Corps; home at Lancaster, Minn.; married; enlisted in the Regular Army Jan. M. 1918; overseas June 10, 1918; saw active service at Pel ford, France, with the French army; was wounded in July, 918; gassed July 24. 1918; was in the hospital five months; won the French War Cross; received his discharge May 12, 1919. Only Kittson County lad to be awarded the Croix de Guerre.
