Joe F. Gurney FRANKSTON - Services for Joe Frank Gurney, 39, Frankston, are scheduled for 2 p.m Sunday in the First Baptist Church in Frankston with the Revs. James Duncan, Odis L. Cleaver and Joel Withem officiating. Burial will follow in the Frankston City Cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Frankston. Mr. Gurney died Friday from injuries received in an accidental fall from his horse while on duty the Texas Department of Corrections. [ Sergeant Joe Gurney succumbed to injuries received when his horse fell on him while he was guarding inmates at the Beto I Unit at 1391 Farm-To-Market Road in Tennessee Colony. Sergeant Gurney was pursuing a runaway horse that had escaped. During the pursuit, he was thrown from his horse, and his horse fell on top of him. He was stabilized at the infirmary before being transported to the Tyler Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. ] He was born Jan, 23, 1949, in Olney, Ill., and was a lifelong resident of Frankston. He was a field sergeant of the Texas Department of Corrections. He served in 101st Airborne Army in Vietnam. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Frankston. Survivors include his wife, Julie Anne Gurney, Frankston; a son, Michael Vance Gurney, Frankston; two daughters, Miss Stephanie Sonya Gurney and Miss Julie Felecia Gurney, both of Summerville; his father and mother, Frank and Viola Gurney, Frankston; a sister, Mrs. Juanita Withem, Summerville; three nieces; one nephew; and several cousins. Pallbearers will be James Beard, Bobby Frausto, W.T. Jennings, Bill Gurney, Bobby Gurney and Harry Lee Gurney. Honorary pallbearers will be the Texas Department of Corrections Beto 1 Field Force.
