Mrs. Velma Vander Kooi, age 89, of Hull, passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2009, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital. There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, September 15, at 2:30pm, at the American Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Steven Bierly will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a family prayer service on Tuesday, at 1:30pm, at the church. Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Monday at the church, with the family present from 7:00-8:30pm. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. Velma Beth was born on May 29, 1920, at Hull, the daughter of John and Margaret (Ver Steeg) Koele. She was raised at Hull, where she graduated from the public elementary and high schools. She then attended the Mankato, Minnesota, Commercial College, where she took secretarial and accounting courses, and she became employed by the Willard Insurance and Real Estate Agency in Mankato. On October 22, 1943, she married James Vander Kooi in Sioux City. While he was in the United States Armed Forces, they made their home in Boise, Idaho, until he was sent overseas. She then was a secretary for a group of medical doctors in San Francisco, California. He went missing in action and was later a prisoner of war. She then was an accountant for the Cudahy Packing Plant in Sioux City. After Jim's return to the United States, they settled at Hull, where Velma served as the bookkeeper for Vander Kooi Freight Lines, which Jim owned. In 1983, they sold their business and entered retirement. She became a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull on January 2, 2007. She was a member of the American Reformed Church, where she participated in the women's activities and was treasurer of Reformed Church Women for 34 years. On the classical level, she was corresponding secretary for a few years. Mrs. Vander Kooi enjoyed baking, reading, sewing, and tours, and she was an avid sports fan, especially following the Boyden-Hull and Hawkeye sports teams. She and Jim also participated in many of their grandchildren's activities. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and their husbands, Joyce and Peter Timmer, Ferne and Dallas Hall, and Phyllis Campbell.
