On June 22, 1944 Pilot 2nd.Lt. LeRoy Lutz took the P-38 "Lucky Lady" out on Mission 78. As Lutz started his strafing run against a German train near Epernay,France, his right engine was hit with ground fire. He stayed with the damaged aircraft and steered it away from the French village of Mardeuil,costing his life. He has remained a hero to those who were spared still today.
