Bio

Sylvia Clara Kerchal, 98, of Ord died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at Valley View Living Center in Ord. Sylvia was born Aug. 7, 1912, on the family farm in the Springdale Township, east of Ord to Henry and Emma (Zikmund) Vodehnal. Survivors of the immediate family include daughter and son-in-law, Leanne and Don Tefft of Kansas City, Mo.; son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Kay Kerchal of Ord; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and a host of friends amd relatives. Sylvia was raised on the family farm and attended grade rural country school in the Springdale Township. As a youngster Sylvia was involved in many of the plays that took place at the Bohemian Hall. She graduated from Ord High School in 1930. Sylvia taught rural school for two years. She met Victor Kerchal at a dance while he was playing in the band. On Sept. 19, 1933, Sylvia and Victor were united in marriage at Ord. The couple made their first home on his family farm in the Nobel Township. In 1948, the couple settled one mile east of Ord. They farmed while Victor was involved in custom commercial farm work and Sylvia prepared meal for the workers. Mr. Kerchal passed away on Feb. 29, 1980. Sylvia moved into Ord in 1982, and worked in the kitchen at the Ord Elks Lodge. Sylvia was a member of the Ord First United Methodist Church, ZCBJ Lodge 14, and the Ord Does 208. She enjoyed gardening, cards and word games. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Victor Kerchal, infant sister, brothers, William, Ernest, Roland and Hubert Vodehnal; granddaughters, Pennie and Jennie Kerchal and infant great-grandson, Nicholas Hansen.
