Dolores "Dee" Powell, 79, of Kearney, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at St. Luke's Good Samaritan Village. Dee was born Jan. 31, 1931, in Loup City to Peter P. and Julia C. (Zielinski) Kosmicki. Survivors are: daughters, Cindy Powell of Kearney and Anita Powell of Elberfeld, Ind.; son, Gregory Powell of Grand Island; grandchildren, Morgan, Mason and Mitchell Powell of Grand Island; brothers, Richard and Delphie Kosmicki, both of Grand Island and a host of friends and relatives. After graduating from Loup City High School, she lived in New York City and Denver before returning to Grand Island, where she worked as a telephone operator. In 1956, she married Raymond Powell. Dee and Raymond lived in Central City, where their children, Cindy, Anita and Greg, were born. Early in the 1970s, Dee worked in advertising, selling signage for Art Kraft and Mayhew Signs. She developed, then operated, Providence Advertising Co. for a number of years. When her husband died in 1982, she moved to Grand Island where she lived until 2005. Dee had a passion for thoroughbred horse racing and was a regular at Fonner Park. Later in life, Dee became a prolific artist, painter and paper sculptor. She read extensively about ancient cultures and biblical archeology and was forever "seeking the truth."
