Bio

Marie was born on December 8, 1911 at Edholm in Butler County to Depot Agent Albert Havel and Mayme Hajek Havel. She attended District #1 rural school and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1929. She taught in Butler County, Districts #53, #60 and #6 for eight years. Marie married Joseph Rezac on June 1, 1937 and had three children: Kathleen, Darryl, and Darlene. She taught in rural school Districts #35, #62 and #91 in Saunders County until graduating from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont in 1969. She then taught fourth grade at North Ward and West Ward Schools in Wahoo for nine years. After retiring in 1977 from the public school system, she taught at St. John's Parochial School in Weston for an additional eight years for a total of 37 years of teaching! Marie and Joe lived on a farm west of Cedar Bluffs for 29 years before moving to Wahoo in 1966. Marie was a member of two extensions clubs since 1937, Dandy Bunch and Platte View Club. She served as County Chairman for three years and many committees; she received recognition in 1997 for completing 60 years of extension service. She was active in 4-H as a child on the 1920's, led 4-H school clubs in the 1930's and was a leader of a 4-H club near Cedar Bluffs in the 1940's. Marie was elected to the Saunders County Historical Society Board in 1975 in which she was very interested and served for 20 years. She served as secretary for seven years and was honored by the board with a lifetime membership for her work done in obtaining and restoring the depot and caboose. She was a member of the Wahoo Women's Club, St. Ludmilla's Catholic Organization, and St. Wenceslaus Church. Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; granddaughter, Alecia Marie Kaiser; and sister Helen Divis. She is survived by her daughters and son, Kathleen Pearson, Darryl and Joyce Rezac, and Darlene and Phil Kaiser, seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo and after 6 p.m. at the church with a Rosary at 7 p.m., continuing on Friday one hour before the service at the church.
