Donald Lee Elzy, 78 of Greenwood, IN. formally of Sullivan, IL went to be with the Lord, Sunday October 17, 2010, in his home. Services celebrating his life will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan, IL. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan, IL. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan, IL. Mr. Elzy was born December 28, 1931 in Moultrie County, the son of Austin Dale and Millie Elizabeth Graven Elzy. He married Shirley Jeanine Hawbaker June 12, 1953 in Decatur,IL., she survives. Also surviving are his son Dennis Elzy and wife Pam of Arlington, IN, daughter Donna Byers and husband Robin of Carmel, IN, and daughter Belinda DeHorn and husband Thom of Greenwood, IN, grandchildren, Olivia and Tessa Byers, Meredith and Taylor Elliott, Jessica Haire and husband Chris, Kylie Conde and husband Phil, and great-grandchild Zoe Conde. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Ray, Dean, and Jr. Dale. Donald graduated from Sullivan High School in 1949; he spent four years in the Air Force in the 170th Fighter Squadron, 183rd Fighter Wing after high School graduation. Donald was an accomplished baseball player and enjoyed the sport in his early years. He graduated in 1967 with a major in Business Administration attending Wilson Junior College and University of Southern California. His professional career took him and his family to various locations including Austenal Company in Chicago, IL. Garrett Corporation in Torrance CA., Howmet Corporation in Whitehall MI., and Central Foundry Division of General Motors in Bedford, IN. He retired from Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors in Indianapolis in 1994 as a process engineer. He was considered a subject matter expert in the field of investment casting. Subsequently, he had an encore career as a Senior Business Consultant at Pleiades International, Carmel, IN until 2001. He enjoyed time with family and friends, and traveling whether business or leisure. He officiated track and field events at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis in 1987 which led to many years of NCAA track and field officiating. He was a long time volunteer at the Indianapolis 500. He served as the President of the Bedford High School Booster Club and volunteered at the Boys Club in Bedford, IN. He was inducted into the Sullivan High School Hall of Fame in 1990. He was awarded the Nick Carter Official of the Year at Indiana University in 1997. His affiliations include The American Ceramics Society, The American Foundry Society, and American Society for Metal International, the First Baptist Church in Greenwood, IN., American Legion Post #252, and the Masonic Lodge #514. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
