Bio

Albert L. Cain, 85, of Axtell, died October 2, 1998, at the Marysville Community Hospital in Marysville, KS, following complications from surgery. Albert was born April 6, 1913, at Hansen, NE, the son of Walter O. and Lulu Corwin Cain. He attended and graduated from Axtell schools in 1933. He entered the U. S. Army on November 11, 1943, and served as a Private until December 9, 1944. Albert married Alice Schmidt on June 4, 1936, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, north of Axtell, KS. She survives at the home. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Axtell and the Axtell Senior Citizens. He was a 56 year member of the R.R. Hendricks American Legion Post #214. He served two terms as mayor of Axtell, starting in 1969. He also had been an Axtell fireman. Albert owned and operated Cain's Grocery in Axtell, with his father. Later, he worked for Luse Grocery Store, Axtell. He is survived by his wife, Alice, of Axtell; sons, Kenneth Cain, Axtell; Galen Cain, Carbondale, CO; Ronald Cain, Overland Park, KS; Gary Cain, Port Hueneme, CA; daughters, Barbara Campbell, Axtell; Bertha Ford, Axtell; Bernita Engelken, Bucyrus, NE; sister, Bessie McMahon, Junction City, KS; 30 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Roland Cain, who died in 1944; grandson, Kenneth Lee II, in 1972; and a great-grandson, Dylan Bivins, in 1994. Mass of Christian Burial was held October 5, 1998, at St. Michael's Church, Axtell, KS. Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors provided by R.R. Hendrick's American Legion Post #214.
