Bio

(Story written by Ethel D. Covert as published in the Sheridan County Heritage Book published in 1983 with permission from the Sheridan County Extension Homemakers Council.) I was born on May 19, 1899 to Mary Woods DeFord and Stephen Alfred DeFord at Canton, Illinois. They named me Ethel Lorene DeFord. They had two sons, Glenn and Lyle. I was four in May and our father died in October 1903. Our mother supported us by doing Practical Nursing. On September 22, 1913 she married Elisha Beets. They had three children, Harold, Esther and Lawrence. We went to school in and around Canton. I entered Nurses Training December 7, 1921 at the Burlington Hospital in Burlington, Iowa, graduating May 12, 1924. I did private duty and general duty. I met Richard F. Covert and we were married November 6, 1926 in the same room we met. Richard worked for the Chicago-Burlington-Quincy Railroad and he was on a turn out of Edgemont, South Dakota. When we arrived in Edgemont his turn was out so we had three days til he could go back to work. Since Sheridan was to be our home, we came on to Sheridan. I can remember we went to a dance at Merriberg. We went on the streetcar and we danced to Lyle Corey's orchestra. I registered in Wyoming and did nursing until 1964. I had some good and some sad experiences. I nursed Alan K. Simpson at the age of seven. He is now one of our congressmen. My husband died January 18, 1963 and is buried at the Custer Battlefield. I have been active in nursing organizations, World War I, Presbyterian Church, American Legion and am a charter member of the Sheridan African Violet Club. Contributor: Stan (47947623)
