Cyrel Dwight Moreland, known to family and friends as Dwight, was a dedicated son of Collin County and a student at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. Born on May 9, 1924, in Altoga, Texas, he was the son of Will Rucker Moreland and Dora May Carson Moreland. Dwight grew up in the Altoga and McKinney area, where he was deeply rooted in the local farming community. Following the example of his older brother, Bruce Malcolm Moreland (Texas A&M Class of 1942), Dwight enrolled at Texas A&M as a member of the Class of 1946, where he studied Agricultural Education. However, as World War II intensified, Dwight's sense of duty led him to leave his studies behind. In the summer of 1942, he resigned from the college to enlist in the United States Merchant Marine, joining the thousands of young men tasked with the perilous job of maintaining global supply lines. On July 19, 1943, while stationed in San Francisco, California, Dwight was killed in a tragic accident involving a ship's boiler explosion. Just 19 years old at the time of his death, he was serving his country during a critical period of the war effort. His remains were returned to his home state of Texas, and he was laid to rest in the Altoga Cemetery. Dwight is remembered as a young man of high purpose who gave his life in service to his country. His name is forever honored on the Texas A&M Roll Call, ensuring that his sacrifice and his place within the Aggie Spirit are never forgotten. He was preceded in death by an infant brother and was survived by his parents and his brothers, Forrest "Jack" Moreland and Bruce Moreland.
