Bio

Thomas Banks was born Ira Grantland to parents James B. and Mary Ann Winton Grantland in Morgan County, Alabama. He was the youngest of four children born to this couple. In 1896 he married Georgia Crowson and together they had four children: Charlie, Jimmy, Lee, and Mary. In the 1900 Hill County, Texas census he is living with his second wife, Clara Barber, and his son Charlie; Ira's sister, Loutie Grantland Key Cook, lives two houses down from him in that census. Between 1912 and 1918, he changed his name to Thomas Banks and is found on subsequent censuses with that name. His four children with Georgia Crowson adopted the surname Banks; however, his son with Clara Barber kept the surname Grantland. Many thanks to Olin and Elizabeth Cecil for sharing this information with me in 1999... he was very elusive before they contacted me...
