Bio

PENDLETON — Alpha Nell Phillips, 83, of Pendleton died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Phillips was born Sept. 1, 1927, in Surgoinsville, Tenn., to Frederick and Marguarite (Watterson) Derrick. She was raised in New Plymouth, Idaho, where she attended grade schools, and graduated from New Plymouth High School in 1945. Following high school she attended business school in Nampa, Idaho. In 1955 she married William McClellen Phillips in Reno, Nev. They lived on a farm in Vale for 16 years, relocating to Pendleton in 1971. They lived in the Pendleton area for 39 years, spending 15 years living on Weston Mountain, their special home. While in Vale she worked as an office manager. In Pendleton she was a secretary in the assessor's office, and then worked as a telephone operator for Pacific NW Bell in Pendleton and Walla Walla. Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband, William M. Phillips of Pendleton; daughters Nancy Daugherty of Wasilla, Alaska, and Kathleen Van Wagoner of Pendleton; brothers Michael Derrick of Show Low, Ariz., and F. D. Derrick III of Rogersville, Tenn.; sisters Dorothy Parker of Tigard and Terri Gheen of Payette, Idaho; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Franklin Derrick. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, P.O.
