Bio
Vernon Eugene "Gene" Rice, 79, of Robinson, passed away at his home Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, surrounded by loving family. Services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 9, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home with Brother Alan Ritchie officiating. Burial will follow at Robinson Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Gene was born in Bosque County, Texas, to William Wesley Rice and Lucy Alberta Pugh-Rice. He was raised and attended schools in Walnut Springs, Texas. Gene served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1953. He retired from the Texas Highway Department in 1982 due to a stroke after 28 years of service. On Oct. 16, 1954, he married Bonnie Eugenia Hazelwood in Glen Rose. Some of the simple things Gene enjoyed were spending time with his family, rock collecting, camping, traveling, and watching airplanes fly in the sky. Even after his stroke, he enjoyed doing them. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Elbert, Crawford, and Hubert Rice; and sisters, Jimmie Helen Rice, Willie Mae Garner, and Ruby Case. He is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Bonnie, of Robinson: sons, Ron Rice and wife, Robin, of Hewitt, and Weldon Rice and wife, Diane, of Robinson; daughter, Rita Hancock and husband, Steve, of Robinson; grandchildren, Rhonda Rice-Sanchez and husband, Michael, of Robinson, Amber Hancock-Cobb and husband, Chad, of Lorena, Justin Rice, Lacy Rice, Wayne Hancock, and Waylon Hancock, all of Robinson; great-granddaughter, McKenzie Cobb, of Lorena; brothers, Wayne and Orville Rice, of Cleburne; sisters, Margarite Dempsey, of Glen Rose, Christine Marsh and Doris Morris, both of Cleburne, and Shirley Kettler, of Robinson; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and a wonderful church family at New Road Church of Christ.
