From Clay County Centennial 1873-1973 Contributed by Bob and Jackie (Holland) Walsh In 1859 at the age of eighteen he was converted, joined the Baptist Church and was licensed to preach the same year. He enlisted as a private in the Civil War, 79th Reg't, Indiana Infanty, was taken prisoner at the battle of Stone River. He escaped from the Confederate stockade slipped through their lines to rejoin the Northern Army. He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga, becaue of his injury was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tennessee May 26, 1865. After the war he migrated with his family to Texas. He first settled at New Highland, where he was officially ordained as a minister of the gospel in 1887. He then moved to Clay County, and settled in Buffalo Springs, later moving to Fannintown. He was instrumental in the organization of the Fannintown Baptist Church and School, he was the pastor of this church for several years, and a circuit rider preaching the gospel to the small settlements south of Henrietta. He never fully recovered from his wound and treatment as a prisoner of war. In 1900 when the United States Postal Department changed the name of the settlement Fannintown to Joy, Texas and established a post office, Uncle Henry as he was then known was appointed the first postmaster, he was the counselor and leader of the community as he had the only telephone.
