Bio

Jesse Z. Beck died suddenly of hemorrhage of the brain yesterday forenoon at the home of his son-in-law, Elder L. S. White, of the First Christian Church. The funeral will be from the residence, 152 Peabody Avenue, to Oakland Cemetery at 10 a. m. today, Gen. R. M. Cane conducting the service. The pallbearers will be W. P. Roberts, T. H. McElreath, A. F. Kirkpatrick, L. R. Terry, W. C. Terry, and W. B. Badger. Mr. Beck was born in Cumberland County, Kentucky Sept 30, 1820. He was a gallant soldier in the Confederate Army, serving under Gen. Forrest. He was captured and was confined for more than a year as a prisoner of war at Johnson's Island. After the war he located at Gallatin, Tenn. Two years ago he came to Dallas to make his home with his only daughter, Mrs. White. He is also survived by a son, who lives at Sparta, Tenn, and a brother W. A. Beck, who lives at Celina, Tex. In battles at Parker's Cross Roads, Thompson's Station and Franklin. Wounded at Franklin in left shoulder by brick knocked from a wall by a cannon ball. Captured at Meredith's Mill on Calf Killer River. Was thrown from horse and right ankle broken Aug. 9, 1863. Sent to Johnson's Island, O., then to Ft. Delaware, Md. Paroled May 12, 1865. G AND K 8 TENN REG C.S.A His memorial has this information: BECK, N.T. PVT Co. G. 8th. TENN d. 02/17/65 Residence was not listed; Enlisted as a Private (date unknown). He was listed as: POW (date and place not stated) "G" Co.
