Josephine De Shields, was born April 6, 1864, daughter of James Calvin and Drucilla (Chandler) Deshields. She died February 16, 1895, reportedly by drowning, and was buried in the Mankins Family Cemetery, near Jonah, Williamson County, Texas. [After Drucilla passed away James married Louisa Bruce.] On December 24, 1893, Josephine was united in marriage to William Henry Mankins, son of Samuel Charles and Docia Mankins, also buried in the Mankins Family Cemetery. He was born January 4, 1838 in Arkansas, died January 6, 1913 and was buried in the IOOF Cemetery, Georgetown, Texas. * * * * On March 15, 2011, Jan Wigley-Beckham reported that there was a little notice in my Chisholm Trail magazine about Josephine's death. I know I read she drowned and also a notice from W. H. Mankins saying he will no longer allow burials in his family cemetery. * * * * Yes, she has left us, Her spirit has fled. Her body now slumbers Along with the dead.
