The first death of the year from smallpox came yesterday when W. H. Garris, age 47, who was reported Tuesday to be in extremely critical condition, died at the county pest house of the disease. He had been sick for about ten days, but the extreme nature of his illness made his recovery seem doubtful. Because the law does not allow the moving of the body of a person having a contagious disease, the funeral was held last night about 9:30 from the pest house, with the Rev. L. E. Carter in charge of the services. Burial was in the Odd Fellows' plot in Highland cemetery. The body was in charge of Lew Gay, county coroner. Mr. Garris held membership in the Lander lodge of Odd Fellows. Services at the grave were in charge of a committee from Casper lodge No. 22 I. O. O. F. Mr. Garris is survived by his wife and father who live at Hudson, Wyo. With one death reported and more cases of smallpox being recorded by local physicians daily, Dr. J. F. O'Donnell, county health officer, has repeated his warning that unless the person has had the disease recently or has been vaccinated within the last few years, vaccination is urged as the only preventive. Vaccination is expected to prevent an epidemic in this county and aid physicians in controlling the disease. Health Officer O'Donnell urges all to be vaccinated by their own family physician. If the person cannot afford this treatment, free vaccination will be given at the county health office. According to the official report on the course of the disease made on Mr. Garris, he had never been vaccinated in his life. He came here about two weeks ago from Hudson where his wife and child are now living. Mr. Garris was seriously injured in an accident in the coal mines at Hudson only a short time ago. He had only recovered from this accident when he arrived in Casper and was taken seriously ill with the small pox. Mr. Garris was well known in Lander and Hudson, having lived there a number of years. Source: Casper Herald, Casper, Wyoming 7 Dec 1922, Page 8
