ILL CITY -- Russ Harris passed away peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at the Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Hospice in Sturgis. He was born July 9, 1936 in Mankato, Minn., to Merle and Veronica (Bunker) Harris. He is survived by his brother, Neal Harris (Sue); a son, Paul (Tracy); a daughter, Natalie (Scott); and seven grandchildren. Russ went to school in Arlington and Conde. He entered the U.S. Navy after graduation and was honorably discharged. He then went on to manage a BF Goodrich tire store in California. He spent most of his later years in Hill City. He especially enjoyed spending time with his son, Paul, wife, Tracy, grandsons, Travis and Clint and his daughter, Natalie, husband, Scott, and granddaughter, Kate. He enjoyed all family/friends' phone calls and visits. Russ was a friend to many and was eager to lend an ear or help others in any way he could. He was a very smart, witty, and funny man all the way to the end. He was preceded in death by his mother, Veronica (Bunker) Harris; his dad, Merle Harris; a sister, Audrey Dahl Chapman; his first wife and mother of his children, Rose Marie Harris (Dirksen); a son, Joe Harris; and his second wife, Sherrie Harris. A special thank you to the folks at the Fort Meade VA Hospice, especially Dorothy, who knew all the right things to say and do. And to a fellow VA resident, Don, who sat with dad and held his hand when I was unable. Your thoughtfulness and compassion meant so much to us. Dad's request was to be cremated with no services. Donations to your choice of a Hospice facility in Russ' memory would be appreciated. Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements and condolences may be conveyed to the family at www.behrenswilson.com.
