Ellis Leon "E.L." Carroll, 93, of Amarillo died Monday, Sept. 13, 2010. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with Bob Crass, senior's minister of Central Church of Christ, officiating. Private burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Carroll was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Winnfield, La., to James and Anna Carroll. He worked at Standard Oil Co. before going into the Army Air Corps, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. Mr. Carroll played semi-pro and professional baseball. He married Marie Hardin on March 14, 1943, in Amarillo. He worked as a diesel mechanic for 35 years, retiring at International Harvester. Mr. Carroll was a longtime member of Central Church of Christ. He loved fishing sports and especially watching football. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Larry Carroll; a nephew, Bill Stone; six sisters; and two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Marie Carroll; two daughters, Julie Black and Janie Weems and husband Johnny, all of Amarillo; two grandsons, Jeff Black and wife Abby and Taylor Weems and wife Amber, all of Amarillo; and four great-grandchildren, all of Amarillo.
